Tempranillo was planted at Carlo & Julian Estate Vineyard in Carlton in 1996, the first fruit of these vines made wine with the 2000 vintage. Tempranillo continues to be made each year from these vines, generally blended with a bit of Estate Merlot, and more recently, also with Estate Malbec. Key quality factors in growing Tempranillo in the Willamette Valley are site selection and choice of rootstock. The Carlton area is warmer than surrounding areas due to distance from the gaps in the coast range which lead to an influx of cooling marine air, a reasonable elevation is also a factor. The riparia rootstock used here for phylloxera resistance has the added benefit of accelerating the maturity of the fruit on the vine by 10-14 days with respect to other rootstocks; the bottom line is better fruit ripeness every year.
